Flora and fauna

In Austria, you can find Hohe Tauern, which is the first National Park in the country. Interestingly, the large area is a wild habitat of a whole third of all animal species in Austria. There you can find around 15,000 different species, originating from places such as - Central Asian tundra, the Arctic, and even Southern Europe. It even has its own big five: the bearded vulture, the mighty ibex, the impressive golden eagle, the sweet marmot and the gracious chamois. If you are lucky and you have a right view of the rocks or cliffs there’s a good chance to spot the ibex. The characteristics of the two powerful horns will help you to notice them. For all the bird enthusiasts, you have the opportunity to observe and admire birds such as -  the griffon vulture and the tiny goldcrest. Other animals that you can witness in Austria are mostly typical for Central Europe, these include - marmots, mountain cows, deer, hares, martens, pheasants and foxes. Imagine how cool it would be to spot some of the animals from the window of your cottage. Important, you should be careful when going to the southern central mountain regions, because bears are still part of the resident wildlife there.

After the winter months the white turns to green, the rivers and lakes thaw, and birds return to breed. Because of the differences in altitude and climate, the number of plant species in Austria is very diverse. Similarly like Finland, Austria is one of the most forested countries of Europe. The forest includes not only broadleaf woodlands but also dense pine forests. The gentle hills and valleys uncover breathtaking views of green meadows. The higher lands have acres of scree with dwarf shrubs and colorful variety of flowers, lichens, and fungi. Even in the coldest areas you can find valuable plant species like the beautiful snow-white edelweiss. In fact, it is important to keep in mind that many of the plant species are rare and protected.
