The hidden wilderness has never seen the crowds of the sea resorts, but it harbours a natural beauty beyond compare.

Bulgaria - a real masterpiece of nature

Bulgaria is a country with astonishing and diverse landscapes, nature attractions, and true hidden gems. It creates a favorable habitat for many wildlife and plant species. The natural vegetation of Bulgaria includes plants like the Bulgarian Blackberry, Rila Primrose, and the Rhodopean Tulip, that are unique for the country. The nature reserves are home to 419 animals, including wolves, brown bears, reptiles, and birds of prey. The most common mammals to be seen in the wild are boar, chamois, and deer. Did you know that the air and water resources in Bulgaria are some of the purest in Europe? This is because Bulgaria is a mountainous country. Why not spoil yourself with some spa at the mineral springs? Bathing in hot water to recover after an active day outside is the perfect way to relax your mind, body, and soul. In Bulgaria there’s an abundance of untamed landscapes waiting to be discovered. You’ll notice it on your first walk in nature. But now let’s see which attractions and places should be included in your bucket list.

The mountains

Two thirds of the whole land is mountainous terrain, occupied by a total of 37 distinct mountains. The capital city of Sofia is surrounded by five of them, the most famous of which is Vitosha. High mountains dominate the southwest and central part of the country. Climb the highest peak of the Balkans - Musala (2,925m), and enjoy a splendid view of the Rila Mountains. Don’t forget to visit The Seven Rila Lakes, a famous tourist attraction in Bulgaria. Reach the hilltop where you can see all the lakes one above the other, then slowly start descending and get a closer look at the thrashing streams, waterfalls and cascades. Located right next to Rila is Pirin Mountain, with the second highest point in the country - Vihren (2,914m). The range of Pirin holds 176 lakes, renowned for their crystal clear waters that are almost transparent. Next, the Rhodope mountain range stretches along the border with Greece, and offers magnificent views of deep river gorges and specific sculptured forms like the Trigrad Gorge. The Rhodope Mountains are also known as Europe’s green heart. These three mountains form a large ecoregion called The Rodope montane mixed forests. It harbours all three of Bulgaria’s national parks - Central Balkan National Park, Rila National Park, and Pirin National Park that is also a world heritage site.

The upland and mountainous terrain continues far southeast with the Strandzha massifs that reach the Black Sea. Strandzha Nature Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria  with more than 120 habitat types. The backbone of Bulgaria is Stara Planina (The Balkan Mountain), a long mountain chain that stretches from west to east to separate the country in northern and southern parts. The highest peak Botev elevates above 2,000m and is close to the center of Bulgaria. The mountain foothills of Stara Planina are lush grasslands and colorful meadows that are dotted with quaint little villages. You can also book accommodation in the undulating forests with ancient trees. Take a woodland walk on a sunny Sunday morning and wake your senses with the forest-scented air. What a better way to start the day! This mountain lacks the soaring peaks of the other massifs, but it is home to remarkable natural attractions and a rich wildlife. The Belogradchik Rocks, declared by the government as Natural Landmark, are strangely shaped sandstone and conglomerate rock formations. The red and orange rocks impress with their unique form, massive size, and a height of 200m. Be amazed by this peculiar creation of mother nature and get your heart racing with the amazing views. Another attraction that is worth your visit is Raysko Praskalo, the highest waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Translated to English, the name means Heavenly Sprinkle. Watch the waters flow from a height of 125m and you’ll certainly see why the waterfall carries that name. South of Stara Planina is the famous Valley of Roses. From May until June the area presents a unique natural scene of multi-colored flowers and pleasant scent of roses.

Places like Pamporovo, Borovets, and Bansko have world-class ski slopes of more than 30 km. The longest ski piste (12km) is located in Borovets in Rila Mountain. This is the longest ski resort in the country, and the closest one to Sofia (68km distance). There you can practice your expert skills in one of the black ski slopes, or take your first lesson if you’re a beginner. Night skiing or snowboarding on the lightened slopes is another fun adventure. This is usually possible until 10pm. The ski resorts also offer cross-country skiing, ski jumping, parks with artificial bumps and jumps, and biathlon training and competitions. You can also go for an alternative ski resort in Uzana, located right in the heart of Bulgaria. It’s also situated in close proximity to Gabrovo - the international capital of humour and satire, and the longest city in Bulgaria.

A cultural and natural experience in Gabrovo

There are a few highlights of the city, inducing the museum Etar. It is an open air ethnographic museum that presents the Bulgarian culture, craftsmanship, and customs. Take a walk on the pavement path, and travel back to the 18th century, the “Bulgarian Renaissance” period with unique architecture of the Bulgarian revival houses. The nature around Gabrovo is something not to be missed! Get lose in the lush undulating forests, go fishing in one of Bulgaria’s main rivers Yantra, or challenge yourself with a rewarding hike.

Sporting activities in nature

Trekking and hiking is well-developed in Bulgaria. The mountains offer many well-signed trails that you can choose from. Do you have an adventurous spirit? Then get yourself a thrilling experience like mountaineering, rock climbing, paragliding, or parachuting. There are more than 4,000 caves, so caving is another popular activity. If you love cycling, then go mountain biking on rough terrain, Bulgaria offers many opportunities. Rafting, canoeing, and kayaking are another great sport that you can practice in one of the 300 rivers around the country. In the spring season it already gets warm enough for wild adventures in water. And if you’re travelling in the summer, you’ll definitely need to cool off in the rivers, lakes, or the sea because the temperatures often stay around 30 degrees and more! Bulgaria has a 378km sea coast that starts from Romania in the north to the Marmara region of Turkey. The Black Sea coast of Bulgaria has sandy beaches and blue waters that can reach temperatures of 27°C in September. This is the best month for a relaxing beach holiday in Bulgaria, if you want to avoid the crowds and mass tourism. Snorkeling, diving, sailing, and fishing are fun activities to fill your adventure time.
