France's nature

The flora of France is diverse and region-specific. Mostly mosses and lichens grow high in the mountains. Alpine meadows are located on the slopes above the upper border of the forest, which are used for grazing sheep and cattle. Below the upper border of the forest, there are coniferous forests consisting of pine, larch, fir and spruce. The lower the height in the mountains, the taller and slender the trees growing there. Coniferous forests give way to broad-leaved oak, beech and chestnut forests.

There are not so many forests preserved in France. Almost all the plains are plowed up. Plantations usually stretch along roads and canals. They are most typical for the landscapes of the bocages of Normandy and Brittany. The most interesting is the vegetation on the Mediterranean coast. Only those plants can grow here that endure a long summer drought. There are no forests here, individual low trees and shrubs grow. There are outcrops of bedrock between them. The most typical trees in this area are olive, cork oak and Aleppo pine.

The fauna of France is not very diverse. Human economic activity had a strong negative impact on the country's fauna. However, the wild fauna is better preserved here than in neighboring countries. Central European, Mediterranean and Alpine species of animals live in France. Most of them live in reserves and national parks of the country. For example, in the West-Iberian Park there are turkey bears and bears, and in the Vanoise National Park in Savoy, stone goats live.

Predatory mammals are represented by foxes, badgers, otters, and the geneta lives in the south of the country. Of the rodents, squirrels, rats and mice are the most characteristic. A large number of bats are found in the southern regions. In some places, hares are still preserved. In some large forest areas such animals live as: red deer, roe deer, wild boar and beaver. In the mountainous regions of. Corsica is inhabited by mouflons, or wild rams.

There are many different birds. The Pyrenees are inhabited by: willow warbler, bullfinch, pika, meadow chimney, song thrush, capercaillie, ratchet warbler and woodcock. There are also: red-winged stencreeper, white-toothed thrush, alpine jackdaw, gray and tundra partridge, and Ialpine finch. Birds such as bearded vulture, griffon vulture and vultures also live in France. The mountains are home to large feathered predators, including eagles and sea eagles. Most of the waterfowl are in the Camargue area, located in the Rhone Delta. France's fish resources are depleted. Most often in rivers and lakes, trout is found, which is artificially bred. The Bay of Biscay is home to sardines, flounder and herring, as well as lobster, shrimp and shellfish.
