Flora and fauna of Spain

The territory of Spain has an extremely diverse, unique and exotic flora and fauna, which gives reason to call it the European Eden. There are over 8,000 plant species in the country. Regionally, the vegetation of the northern “wet” part of Spain and the rest of the “dry” part is very different. For "wet" Spain, deciduous forests are characteristic, the basis of which is deciduous oak, chestnut, beech, and in the Pyrenees - also European spruce and fir. Unlike northern Spain, "dry" Spain is poor in real forests; sparse forests with the participation of evergreen oak species(stone, cork, Portuguese, etc.) are widespread here. In addition, thickets of Mediterranean pine species are typical of this area. Black pine forests are found in the mountains of Central and Southern Spain. The most common in the "dry" part of Spain are thickets of evergreen shrubs(myrtle, juniper, wild pistachio and short trees).

The fauna of the country is very rich and varied as well. In the north of Spain, the Central European fauna reigns (deer, roe deer, wild boars). The red deer and the Pyrenean ibex have survived in the mountainous regions, while brown bears are found in the Cantabrian mountains and the mountains of the province of León. Among the predators, wolves and foxes have survived and, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, Spanish lynxes.

In terms of species composition of birds, Spain is considered one of the richest in Europe. In summer, you can see about 30 species of birds of prey here (hawks, eagles, griffins, falcons, etc.) and many water birds (geese, ducks, flamingos, white storks); reptiles include lizards, snakes, chameleons, tarantulas and scorpions. Among the symbols of Spain, one can note the burial eagle (a symbol of the monarchical family), the imperial heron, flamingo, bustard, black stork. There are also the Spanish lynx, brown bear, Pyrenean desman, Iberian goat, Gibraltarian tailless macaque (the only natural habitat of monkeys in Europe).

Attractions

The main type of holiday in Spain is summer vacation, which means going to the beach; most of the resorts are concentrated on the Mediterranean coast in Catalonia, so small resort towns and comfortable conditions on the coast attract millions of tourists. However, this type of recreation is far from the only one in this country. In almost all coastal regions you can dive and get acquainted with the inhabitants of the underwater world. The northern regions (Basque country, Asturias, Galicia) are located on the Atlantic coast, where there are all conditions for surfing. The warm climate and scenic landscape is ideal for hiking and cycling trips as well.

You can also go to conquer the waves on the Mediterranean coast. The spots of this part of the country are located in Andalusia, in the districts of the cities of Cadiz and Tarifa. However, the waves here are quite low, and therefore are suitable only for those who are just learning to stand on the board. Professionals should go to the Canary Islands - Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura. You can go to the islands at any time of the year - in winter it will be interesting for professionals to fight the waves on the coast of Tenerife, for beginners it will be more comfortable on the shores of Lanzarote. Windsurfing is also popular in Andalusia, Murcia and Catalonia. In the central part of the country, you can windsurf at the El Atazar and San Juan dams near Madrid.

Spain has a very mild climate, which allows tourists to go on hiking and cycling tours almost all year round. One of the most popular hiking destinations is the limestone mountains in Cantabria in the north of the country; the trails run through the Picos de Europa National Park, where you can meet a large number of different animals. Another classic tour is the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. The road follows a pilgrimage route and is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Alicante, cycling trails are laid in picturesque places along the sea coast, travelers can not only enjoy nature and attractions, but also relax on the Mediterranean coast.

Climate

Spain is divided into three climatic zones. The northern part of the country is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, which makes the winter not so cold (the temperature does not drop below +2°С), and the summers are mild and moderately hot. This region is considered one of the best in the world for living with children, because of the absence of extreme temperature changes and dry summer periods that help kids feel comfortable all year round. The sea warms up to 20°С - 22°С in summer.

In the central part of the country, the climate is cooler, continental, due to the fact that the movement of warm air masses is difficult. But even here better not waiting for frosts. It is, of course, cold in winter, especially in mountainous regions, but the temperature does not drop below +2°C. The exceptions are mountains, here it may be -8°С, but it should be kept in mind that such a temperature is rare and it is not felt so strongly. The weather in Spain in mountainous regions changes smoothly, sudden temperature changes are very rare.

The climate in the southeast of the country is Mediterranean, mild, with short warm winters and hot summers. The temperature in the summer months reaches +35°C, but most of the time this figure varies from +25°С to +28°C. Winter lasts from December to February, the average temperature in the coldest period is between +12°С to +18°С.
