Cottages in Parc Adula

Adula or otherwise known as Rheinwaldhorn or Piz Val Rhein is a massive part of the St. Gotthard massif of the Lepontine Alps in Southern Switzerland. It resembles a group of peaks which stand in the middle of two river Rhein branches. What is interesting about this massif is that the summit is split between two municipalities – Ticino and Graubünden.

Our cottages around the area of Adula Park provide visitors to the park with the possibility to choose an entering point according to their preferences. Our cottages in Switzerland or Italy are close to the park premises, allowing guests to enjoy a full day at the park and return to the comfort of their cottage afterwards. The hosts are friendly and will make sure that you have everything needed for a pleasant stay.

Nature beyond comparison

Rheinwaldhorn was once believed to be the origin of river Rhine. The glacier in the middle of the massif was named Paradise and in its valley a place called the Ursprung is where locals believed their enormous river begins. After geographs explored the area later on, they discovered that the actual source of the river was actually the Toma Lake.

Rheinwaldhorn is also the highest point in Ticino and the highest mountain part of the Adula Alps. The peak offers a unique panorama, as it is surrounded by valleys and plateaus which do not interfere with the view and provide visitors with a chance to enjoy one of the rarest sceneries in the Alps – you can see all the way from the Otztal Alps to Gran Paradiso. A legend says that in the past when the air was much cleaner, the Dome of Milan could be seen from Rheinwaldhorn. The valleys are the Blenio Valley, parts of the Surselva and the Hinterrhein as well as Graubünden’s Misox. Moreover, you can explore and hike through the small but high Val Sumvitg, Val calanca or Val Malvaglia.

Adventures in the wild

Of course, hiking is one of the best ways to discover the Adula region. There are numerous paths and you are bound to meet locals, farmers or animals along the way. Three routes have been established and lead to the peak, however we advise you to take on this adventure with a guide as the routes might become dangerous at some points where rockfall and crevasses may have formed.

In the springtime, you can climb the summit with a pair of skis. This is an amazing and unforgettable experience as the weather is usually nice and the scenery is terrific.

Adula Park is a candidate to become the second national park in Switzerland. It is the largest territory preserved from human work in the country. Geological importance further aids the battle to turn the park into a protected area with a national statute. Moreover, there is a unique mixture of cultures in the region, where German, Italian and north-German are the three widely interchangeable languages used by the locals.
