Paphos holidays
The island of Cyprus is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. Contrary to popular belief, Cyprus is not located immediately south of Greece, but is in fact situated a bit east from there, standing south from Turkey and west of the Syrian coastline. The nature of the island is striking, making the island a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts looking for an island adventure. Paphos is the westernmost district of the island. It makes up for 15% of Cyprus’ territory.
If you are looking for an island holiday, then look no further. Most of the region of Paphos is surrounded by water, and the coast is truly remarkable with huge cliffs, gulfs and coves. You will undoubtedly have a lot of fun exploring nature and enjoying outdoor activities near the water. The beaches will welcome you with nice weather, soft sand and a view of the numerous tiny isles along the coast.
A natural holiday in Paphos
If you decide to spend your holiday at Paphos, get ready for some nature exploring. For its relatively small size, Cyprus enchants with a rich landscape of sunny beaches, hills and mountains, valleys and gorges. Paphos region is no different.
On the western point of the island, a protected territory lays and welcomes visitors throughout the year. Akamas National Park is situated just on the tip of Cyprus and bears ecological significance for the region and the whole of Cyprus. This national park is where you will find impressive amounts of rare flora and fauna species, many of which are indigenous to Paphos. Examples include Lara turtles, tulips, orchids, cyclamen, as well as the Glaucopsyche Paphos Butterfly.
The baths of Aphrodite is a famous area near Polis. The legend says that Aphrodite used to bathe in this cool pond near Polis. Except for its legendary story, the cave also attracts visitors as many believe the water provides visitors with eternal youth. The views from the caves are also spectacular – the landscape opens to the sight of Polis Bay.
Aphrodite’s Rock is another popular nature attraction. This is considered to be one of the most beautiful places along Cyprus' coastline. The most interesting part is how the coastline is covered in enormous rocks. There are many legends about this place, involving not only Aphrodite and other mythological people. The other name of this place is Petra tou Romiou, which is translated to “the Rock of the Greek”.
Activities
Paphos is known to have one of the best trekking places throughout Europe. Avakas Gorge can be explored starting from either Agios Georgios Peyias near the coast, or from Arodges village. The southern part of the gorge undoubtedly bears the most impressive forms! The views are also stunning – pine trees, cypresses, junipers and many more trees on the rocks. Butterflies, owls and foxes will keep you company on this 3 km trekking experience.
Hiking is also a great activity to explore the Paphos area. For example, near the Baths of Aphrodite, you can take the nature trail leading you up the rocks. This trail offers some of the best views of the Polis Bay!
