Villa Madeira

Have you ever wished to escape from it all to a remote island in the middle of the ocean? Well, check out our villas in the island of Madeira and your wish might come true. The Portuguese island is situated 1000 kilometers from the Portuguese mainland, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira is widely known as the “Flower Island” with its lush vegetation, thanks to the pleasurable climate all year round.

The villas you can choose from vary from small and charming family houses, located on a sunny hilltop to spacious and luxurious villas big enough for 10 people. Almost all of them allow pets on the premises and have internet connection. They are located in nature far away from locals and tourists. Equipped with all the extras you will need. From fully furnished rooms and kitchenette to fireplace, barbeque, swimming pool and even your very own fruit and veggie garden.

Flora and Fauna

Madeira is neighbored by the Porto Santo island and Desertas islands, making it an archipelago. It has been populated in the 15 century and has a population of about 300,000 locals. The island of Madeira is mostly mountainous terrain covered with spectacular vegetation, distinguished by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage.

The 1.8 million years old Laurissilva forest forms a large portion of the greenery on the island, covering an area of 15 thousand hectares. Many large trees can be found there like the Til, the Laurel-Tree and the Brazilian Mahogany. The perfect way to explore the flora is by taking a walk through the levadas. Levada is an aqueduct, built to carry water to the agricultural regions in the south and provide hydro-electric power. There are over 2,200 km of levadas and they provide a network of walking paths. Some provide easy and relaxing walks through the countryside, but others are narrow, crumbling ledges, because they were cut into the sides of mountains. Once covering the whole land, the subtropical rainforest can be found in the south region of the island. The endangered vine Jasminum azoricum and Sorbus maderensis can be found only here.

Covering almost two thirds of the island, the Madeira Nature Reserve is located here and it contains flora and fauna unique in the whole world. The rich natural ecosystem incorporates a high degree of endemic species that represents most of the significant ecological units of the island. On the island itself you have a chance to see the Trocaz pigeon, the Berthelots squeaker and the Madeira firecrest.. Both species cannot be seen elsewhere in Europe. It is said that the Madeiran large white butterfly still roams these places, but has not been seen since 1977 so may now be extinct. The Madeiran wall lizard is also an endemic animal representative here. It can be found almost everywhere on the island. Madeiran scops owl and Madeiran wood pigeon haven’t been seen here since the 20th century.

Madeira has a rugged coastline with many cliffs and coves, so there are few extensive beaches. Between the rocks are basins carved by the sea where you can bathe during this cheap sun holiday while looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. And at the end of a day filled with adventurous exploration go home to your villa home and relax away from the hurried city life and everyday problems.

What to do in Madeira?

If the heat of the sun gets too much, people can enjoy themselves in the 'natural swimming pool' at the village of Porto Moniz in the north of the island. Or go and check out some of the many fishing villages around the small capital Funchal. All you football fans out there can visit Cristiano Ronaldo Museum in Funchal. While in the city you must stop by the Botanical Garden. Endemic plants but also sublime palm trees, medicinal plants or incredible succulents can be observed in this garden which also houses a bird park with cockatoo and macaw parrots.

Because of the motion above levadas, this place is very famous amongst hikers. Walk down a fairytale path, surrounded by untouched forests and tunnels going straight through the mountains. Enjoy the fresh air, quietness and tranquility of it all. Climb all the way to Europe’s highest cliff Cabo Girao. The 25 Fontes levada is one of the most beautiful hiking paths for nature lovers. It has stunning waterfalls, but be sure you have the right gear, because it can get very dark through a tunnel over 800 meters long on the path.

Forget the chlorinated pools and discover natural pools, made by nature in volcanic rock with water constantly renewed by the ocean. And if a stunning view is what you are looking for Ponta de São Lourenço are the hills for you. You should definitely go to the clean golden beaches of Porto Santo with your family and enjoy the warm blue waters. Or cool off in the São Vicente Caves made of a series of lava tubes. And it’s a shame if you don’t take a boat ride out in the ocean and observe the beautiful landscapes of the island’s coasts and some of the 28 species of cetaceans that inhabit or visit the waters of Madeira Islands, like dolphins for example.
